CAVEMAN SHOESTORE Flux and Master Cylinder 1995

Master Cylinder 1995

Flux 1995

The band's first full-length CD as a trio, Master Cylinder, was released by Tim/Kerr Records in 1993, and has since been described by album producer Alessandro Monti as influenced by everything from Conlon Nancarrow to Black Sabbath and from grunge to prog rock. Some tracks might also lead to comparisons with Discipline-era King Crimson -- although overall the record seems designed to be played at parties in which guests could be asked "what instrument do you think that was?" in reference to the apparent predominance of electric guitar played in a metal-grunge style. Surprise: "NO GUITARS!" exclaim the liner notes...the speaker-busting sound in question came from Chalenor's fuzz bass. Coupled with Franzoni's sometimes pounding rhythms on the "membranophones," the Caveman Shoestore of Master Cylinder could be a heavy item indeed, but the band's sound was balanced by diFalco's enjoyably rich yet never histrionic vocals, often in multi-tracked harmonies, as well as her solid electric keyboard work.

In 1994 the second Caveman Shoestore album on the Tim/Kerr label, entitled Flux, was released; the album found the band expanded to a quartet including Amy DeVargas on vocals, second bass, and cello -- indeed, DeVargas was a somewhat more prominent vocal presence (and more assertive in the higher ranges) than diFalco, and wrote or co-wrote five album tracks. Guest Jen Harrison was also featured on French horn. The album had a more diverse sound overall than Master Cylinder -- without the heavy metal masquerades prominently featuring Chalenor's fuzz bass disguised as a roaring guitar -- and placed considerable emphasis on Chalenor/DeVargas interlocking bass parts, tribal-flavored rhythmic undercurrents, and diFalco's keyboard work often emphasizing the Hammond organ, although her synth and piano were featured as well. In an interview with Allen Huotari on the /All About Jazz website, Chalenor notes that on the first two Caveman Shoestore CDs, the band explored "really crazy" polyrhythms in the context of "sick" pop tunes.

These particular CMJ promo CDs were sent along with a fantastic and info filled music magazine by the same name: College Music Journal. CMJ magazine was available to subscribers only which consisted of record labels, radio stations, promoters and anyone who worked in music media. The subscription per year was a staggering $325. CMJ was not the same CMJ magazine which was released to the general public and available at local bookstores. I really looked forward to the newest CMJ to check out the new artists on the promo CDs and read all about the latest music happenings. I used to own stacks of these CDs but got rid of them over a period of time. Unfortunate for me now. So I'm sharing these rare releases to you. Hope you enjoy.
If you'd like to hear more of these, please leave a comment and I will see if I can dig up some more.

NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL In the Aeroplane Over the Sea 1998

FUCK Pardon My French 1997

Fuck was formed in Oakland, California in 1993. The members met while stuck in a police holding cell over the weekend, and wrote a few songs while in jail.[1] They released a self-titled cassette called Fuck, and a single, MonkeyBeautyShotgun on their own imprint, Rhesus Records, in 1994. (The songs from the cassette would eventually find their way onto later releases.[2]) They released their second full-length album Pretty...Slow in 1996. The album was ultimately released on three different labels. Their third album, Baby Loves a Funny Bunny, was also released in 1996.

The band then signed to Matador Records, who released the albums Pardon My French in 1997 and Conduct in 1998. According to Timothy Prudhomme, the band were told by a Matador marketing director that they needed to change the name of the band. They refused to give in.[3]

CHRIS WHITLEY Living With the Law 1991

Christopher Becker Whitley (August 31, 1960 – November 20, 2005) was an American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Highly acclaimed by critics, Whitley achieved modest mainstream success, but had a devoted following. Whitley's style was rooted primarily in blues, but drew on an array of influences and was constantly changing. In 2001, the New York Times described his arc as "restless, moving into noise-rock and minimalist jazz evoking Chet Baker and Sonic Youth as much as Robert Johnson".

KITCHENS OF DISTINCTION Capsule: The Best of KOD 1988-94

Reupped December 2012

It must have been a difficult task, assembling the best moments of Kitchens Of Distinction's frequently brilliant career. To that extent perhaps the only people who could have decided on a track listing - without being criticised by their adoring fans - would be the band themselves. The limited edition version features 2 CDs, one for the 'best of' and one for the devotees which includes B-sides, demos, live tracks and acoustic versions

PHONO - COMB Fresh Gasoline 1996

Discogs

Phono-Comb first materialized when Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet played with Jad Fair when he was performing in Toronto to promote a film about his band Half Japanese. Shadowy Men were planning a hiatus around this time, and guitarist Brian Connelly opted out of the planned followup recording project (although he is credited as a co-songwriter on all the songs). Don Pyle and Reid Diamond invited Dallas Good of The Sadies to step in, and 'Jad Fair & Phono-Comb' was born. They recorded a single in 1995 and a full-length album,Monsters, Lullabies...and the Occasional Flying Saucer in 1996. After this recording, Fair returned to his solo career, and the remaining trio recorded an instrumental single. In 1996, they added Beverly Breckenridge (of Fifth Column) on bass, and Reid Diamond switched over to guitar. As a quartet, they recorded a CD, Fresh Gasoline with Steve Albini producing. The band toured throughout North America and one of their songs was featured on the soundtrack of the documentary film Pitch. Reid Diamond died of cancer in February 2001.

I wasn't able to find a video of The Black Velvet Band. However, the singer, Maria Doyle Kennedy, played a role in the movie The Commitments. You can see her in the video singing backup. Maria is the 3rd woman to the right. If you haven't seen this movie, you should check it out. Kennedy is also currently starring in The Tudors. She was also at one time a member of the Hothouse Flowers.
